The Legendary Anime Ends a Quarter-Century Tradition in the Coming Year

It's the end of an iconic period for ongoing anime, with Toei Animation revealing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and featured dozens of non-canon storylines. Commencing in January, after the Egghead Island arc concludes, the animated series will go on a three-month hiatus until April, when the next major arc kicks off.

Updated Production Plan

From now on, the series will produce a pair of cours every year for a maximum of two dozen installments. The studio states this will help the anime to “dive even deeper into the heart of the ONE PIECE world — including more content, tempo, and pacing of the source material.” However, producers end by promising “exciting surprises” during the hiatus period, which suggests more One Piece content, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, scheduled to debut during this gap.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The series anime had a half-year break that began in October 2024 and ended in early 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to enhance the animation quality and let the comic to get further ahead to avoid a faster anime pace and lengthy recap episodes. The show greatly benefited from this respite, and it has managed to supply viewers with numerous fight scenes, superior graphics, and reduced non-canon content than previously.

Adopting Modern Trends

Although some recap episodes sprouted up during this season, the benefits of this new production schedule far surpass the occasional interruption in the action. This additionally allows the manga, which is currently in the middle of the latest arc, to extend its lead on the anime. According to the news, this may lead to a single installment of the anime adapting one chapter, with others instead handling more material or more to compensate for time.

It's the end of a generation for Japanese animation, as One Piece is the last big series to abandon the traditional method of production, which prioritized being on air for almost the entire year. It's the reason why iconic series such as Naruto, and of course itself have so many side stories, and the quality of the art can change drastically between installments and the following. Nowadays, series creation is structured in cours, with one or two maximum coming out each annually, enabling improved visuals and greater accuracy to the source material.
