Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.

Replay technology will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.

Athletes are granted the right to challenge particular decisions from the official, mirroring the protocol already in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step follows just a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine specific situations, such as:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can initiate.

Practical Application

An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Other Changes

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where spectators have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was out or in.

In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
